Information technology is another term for computing, which is the use of computers and other devices for exchanging, retrieving, storing, and networking of electronic data. Information technology consultants advise companies of all sizes, from startups to large international corporations, on the fastest, most efficient, and cost-effective information technology systems for their business. The specialty areas that information technology consultants may focus on include hardware, software, networks, communications, and Web design, among others. The IT consulting industry consists of large companies that offer IT consulting services as well as other business services to other companies. IT consultants may also work independently.

The general consulting industry has origins in the early 1900s, when manufacturers sought advice on how to increase worker productivity and maximize profits. Consulting businesses were established in the United States to help companies solve these and other problems. Information technology consulting businesses first emerged in the 1980s, after the personal computer was introduced to the mass marketplace. Since the 1990s, the evolution of the Internet and social media have contributed to the growth of the information technology consulting industry.

In May 2015, there were more than 4 million people employed full time in computer and mathematical occupations, including information technology jobs, in the United States, as reported by the Department of Labor.
Sales&Trading-Careers in This Industry

Lifestyle Issues
Traders revel in the lifestyle afforded by their jobs. They love the fact that they’re done when the market closes. And it only gets better: generally speaking, the more senior a trader is, the sooner he or she gets out after the market closes.

The one negative to working market hours is that you’ve got to get up very early to get to work. Typical fixed-income and equity desks are fully staffed by 7:30 a.m. For most people, this means getting up at least one hour before that. International equity traders who are trading London hours are in even earlier. Investment bankers, by contrast, begin rolling in the door after 9:00 a.m.

In contrast to most investment bankers, S&T professionals actually get to take their vacations. When senior traders are out, junior traders have an opportunity to step up. Normally there’s a pecking order among the junior trading staff. The worst way to lose your position on this list is to trade the pad and lose a ton of money. While this is not a regular occurrence, it is very unpleasant and junior traders who step into this responsibility when a senior trader is on vacation need to strike the right balance between being aggressive and being cautious with someone else’s P&L. Junior salespeople have a tougher time earning this type of backup role. Most of the time, if a salesperson is on vacation, it’s easy enough to re-assign that person’s accounts to the remaining sales staff. This minimizes any disruptions to the level of service to the client, but it also doesn’t provide a learning opportunity for junior salespeople. When a junior salesperson earns the confidence of management, that salesperson will be given an opportunity to develop his or her own book of business, typically starting with accounts that have not done very much business with the firm in the past.

Lunch is also worth talking about. There is a rather unpleasant hierarchy whereby summer interns and first-year analysts and associates...Read More

Sales&Trading-Interview

Interviewing in This Industry
The key to acing an interview is preparation—and beginning your preparation as soon as possible. It’s a lot easier to begin learning finance concepts early and gradually than it is to become a fixed-income derivatives expert in two weeks. Begin reading The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg Businessweek, Fortune, Forbes, and other business periodicals as soon as possible. Sales and trading interviewers, while not overly technical, tend to want to talk about the stock market. A typical question that you may be asked is, “What do you think about the stock market.” This is a very open-ended question, but the more you are able to tie your market view to current events, the better.
Fit Questions
Fit questions are normally the first screen to moving on to the next round of interviews. These questions are pretty typical investment banking fare, but you should be prepared to talk about why you want to trade or sell. Make your answer as concrete as possible by offering examples in your past that support your belief that you will make a great trader or salesperson.

1) Why do you want to become a trader/salesperson?

This question is not so relevant for someone with industry experience, but especially important for career switchers. Consultants who go back to school to get an MBA or a degree in quantitative mathematics to become traders need to have a reason for the career switch. This story should involve personal reflection and things that you’ve done in the past that suggest that you might be good at trading in the future. Maybe you’ve traded a personal account and not lost everything. Maybe you’re quick with the numbers. For salespeople, the important thing is that you love to sell. If you have a story of a time when you sold the equivalent of “nonexistent oceanfront property in Kansas,” by all means, tell it.

2) What are your greatest strengths?

Here you want to talk...Read More

Job Searching in This Industry
There are many ways to search for jobs including visiting industry, association, and social-media Web sites; participating in internships (which can often lead to a full-time position); networking; participating in information interviews; and contacting recruiters (although recruiters typically don’t work with those with fewer than three years of experience.).
Participate in an Internship
As with any industry, an internship is the best way to determine whether or not a profession best matches your skills, abilities, and interests. It also gives employers a relatively low-cost way to try out potential employees, after which they can hire interns they feel will fit well in their organizations.

The best place to start an internship search is your school’s career services office. Every school does it a little differently, but usually, these offices provide a treasure trove of information. You can use this information to supplement information that you can get from your target firm’s corporate Web site. Be sure to seek out other students who have worked at your target firm to get their perspective on the firm’s culture and what type of summer or full-time experience they had.

Vault.com provides in-depth intelligence on what it’s really like to work in investment banking at the top investment banking firms—and how to position yourself to get the finance career you want. At Vault.com—which is best known for its influential rankings, ratings, and reviews of top employers and internship programs—you can read thousands of verified reviews from employees and interns at the top investment banking firms and see which banking firms rank as the best to work for, best in terms of prestige, and best in numerous quality of life categories, including compensation, hours, training, business outlook, and more.
Structure
Sales and trading professionals work at a variety of employers—from large “bulge bracket” investment banks and regional firms, to wholesalers and hedge funds.
Bulge Bracket Banks
Full-service bulge bracket investment banks usually provide both financing and advisory services, as well as the sales, market making, and research on a wide range of financial products including equities, currency, commodities, credit, rates, and financial derivatives. It’s very common for one bulge bracket bank to be competitive in investment banking, commercial banking, asset management, private equity, venture capital, mortgage finance, and more. Leading investment banks (by revenue) worldwide include JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Citi, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse, Barclays, UBS, and Wells Fargo Securities.

Most investment banks have a financial holding company structure, which serves as a shell corporation that issues common stock, the bank’s equity capital, financing the bank’s activities. The bank’s equity capital also serves as a financial backup in the event of any write-offs from bad loans or investments.
Boutique and Specialty Firms
Boutique firms tend to service one type of customer very well, or are very good at one type of transaction. Specialty firms focus their expertise on covering one or several market sectors, and can be thought of as mini-investment banks with a sales desk to support the trading effort, and investment bankers trying to nab the big deal away from the larger firms on the basis that the firm offers specialized service and expertise in a particular market niche. Boutiques and specialty firms include Allen & Co., Laqdenburg Thalmann, Neuberger Berman, Miller Tabak + Co., Sanders Morris Harris, Jefferies Financial Group, Weeden & Co., Cowen, and Baird.
Regional Firms
Some firms swim in small ponds and pick up the business that the New York City junkyard dogs overlook....Read More

Sales&Trading-The Basics

Overview
Wall Street is an exciting place to be, and sales and trading is one of Wall Street’s most exciting areas. If you’re a financial market junkie, then sales and trading might be right for you. Along with an interest in financial markets, it will help you break into the industry if you have a background in computational finance, software engineering, or another tech field. In recent years, there’s been a trend toward automated trading, some of which is done by using complex algorithms.

So what is sales and trading exactly? Many sales workers and traders work on the “sell side,” which refers to Wall Street investment banks that sell stocks, bonds, and other securities to the “buy side.” The buy side refers to the investment management firms, pension funds, hedge funds, and trusts that buy stocks, bonds, and other securities from the “sell side.” Outside the investment banking industry, traders work for hedge funds, brokerage firms, commercial banks, insurance companies, asset management firms, and mutual fund companies.

The most important function of a sales and trading department at an investment bank is, of course, to make money. An investment bank collects significant fees every time its sales and trading professionals execute a deal for clients. Traders and salespeople add incrementally to the bottom line through daily profits and losses and commissions, and raise the profile of the firm in the marketplace.

Opportunities for sales and trading professionals are available throughout the United States, but are best in New York City, where many investment banks, hedge funds, and other financial firms are located. Major investment banks include Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Centerview Partners, Evercore, and Credit Suisse. Leading hedge fund firms include Bridgewater Associates, AQR Capital Management, Man Group, Renaissance Technologies, Two Sigma, Millennium Management, Elliott Management, Baupost Group, BlackRock, and Winton Capital...Read More

Entries Venture Capital Accountants and Auditors Quick Facts Overview
Accountants compile, analyze, verify, and prepare financial records.Auditorsensure that financial records are accurate, complete, and in compliance with local, state, and federal laws. More than 1.3 million people are employed as accountants and auditors; only a tiny fraction of this number are employed in the venture capital industry.
History
In recent years, demand has grown for accountants (especially certified public accountants, or CPAs) and auditors as a result of the growing complexity of business transactions and the passage of a variety of laws (such as the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act) that require companies to be more transparent regarding their finances. “During the last 20-odd years, CPAs have become some of the most important decision makers in business,” according to Start Here, Go Places, an accounting career Web site created by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. “If it wasn’t for CPAs, businesses wouldn’t know when to invest more capital. Or when to grow. Or downsize. They might even be out of compliance with current laws. Their superhuman ability to create, analyze, and interpret financial info makes them the first to know where the company stands and where it’s headed.”
The Job
Accountants and auditors are important behind-the-scenes players in the business world. Smart executives know that their organizations are only as good as their accounting and auditing departments.

Job responsibilities for accountants in the venture capital industry vary by the size of the employer, the stage of the fund’s investments, and other factors, but major responsibilities include:

working closely with partners during the launch and set-up of new funds, during the acquisition of portfolio companies, and during exits (i.e., mergers, the sale of the company, or an initial public...Read More

Venture Capital-Structure and Industry Outlook

Structure The Traditional Venture Capital Fund
Most venture capital funds are set up as independent limited partnerships. This includes well-known coastal names like Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Highland Capital Partners, as well as regional up-and-comers such as Renaissance Venture Capital Fund. The venture capital firm acts as the general partner (GP) with third-party institutions investing the bulk of the capital to the fund, filling the role of limited partner (LP). During the fundraising phase that every venture firm goes through in building a new fund, the GP seeks out investment commitments from accredited investors. The VC firm distributes a private placement memorandum (PPM) or prospectus to potential LPs, and might expect to raise the necessary capital over the course of the ensuing six to 12 months.

Funds generally raise anywhere from $10 million to several billion dollars from their limited partners. According to the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA), more than 50 percent of investments in venture capital come from institutional pension funds, with the balance coming from endowments, foundations, insurance companies, banks, affluent individuals, and other entities who seek to diversify their portfolio with an investment in risk capital. Venture capital firms raised $32.97 billion in 2014, according to Dow Jones VentureSource, an increase of 62 percent from 2013, and the highest total since 2007 (before the Great Recession). It is the GP’s job to invest this capital in privately held, high-growth companies. In order to make these investments, the venture firm has to “call in” its LPs’ commitments through tranches or “capital calls.” Venture firms have synchronized these calls (sometimes also called “takedowns” or “paid-in capital”) to their funding cycles, allowing funds to be available on an as-needed basis.

A partnership agreement sets forth the relationship between the GP (the VC firm) and...Read More
